Squirt's Recovery

I have learned a great deal from Squirt, following his accident. The speed of Squirt's recovery has surprised me. Although Squirt isn't walking quite the same as he used to, and his tail still doesn't work, his dog-optimism is probably what has kept him alive.

Although we have much to teach our dogs, man's best friend can also teach us about some things that human society has erased from our character over time. In the wake of our misfortune, be it economical tribulations, illness, injury, or other troubles, a positive attitude will go a long way for two reasons. First, having a positive outlook and a sense of humor will help us heal and triumph over troubles. Squirt the mutt is a perfect example of this. After being run over by an oil tanker truck, Squirt was up and walking the very next day, and he continues to recover.

Second, having a positive outlook and a sense of humor will help those around you not become upset about what has happened to you. Several of Squirt's friends were very upset the night of his accident, as we were unsure if he would make it through the night. However, the next morning, when he was walking around on his three good legs with a doggie smile on his face, Squirt helped ease our pain and worries. I like to think that Squirt was telling us, "It's okay guys, things are going to be okay again." And they were.

3 reflections:

  1. They are amazing. It's like they're saying, "Hey I have three more legs, what's the big deal?"
